Gaz, Iris, Rene, Gordie and Katrin are just back from an awesome ski tour at the head of the Fox Glacier, Westland National Park.
We flew in by helicopter to Pioneer hut situated @ 2360m in the middle of the Fox Glacier Neve. Having flown in, the team immediately set off for a tour up to Governors col on the Main divide. Some pockets of nice powder was skied on the way back to the hut. The next morning was windy, but after a late breakfast, we headed up to Pioneers pass for a view down into the Tasman Glacier valley. Day three was a tour thru Westhoe pass, and a ski down into the Franz Josef glacier neve, then a skin up to Mt Von Bulow and a ski down ‘Halcombe Pass’ back into the Fox Neve and home via a great ‘corn’ run, back to pioneer hut for tea and biscuits.
Next morning we headed down glacier with our packs on and skied the great run down the ‘trough’ between Chancellor dome and the Fox ice fall, down to Chancellor hut. The team spent an extra night in Chancellor playing cards and generally having a good ole time before the weather cleared next morning allowing a flight out.
Awesome trip …. must do it again next season…
