mountaineering crevasse rescue course

Mountain guide Gary is just back from the Mt Cook region where he instructed a 4 day crevasse rescue course for Alpine Guides.

This was based at Plateau hut, a fantastic venue for this with perfect crevasse terrain right beside the hut and spectacular views of Mt Cook, Silberhorn, Tasman, Lendenfeld, Dixon.

A wee climb on to Glacier Dome gave awesome 360 degree views of glaciers, moraine walls, terminal lakes, firn zones, neves, bergshrunds etc for the participants on the mountaineering skills course.

Classic Swiss mountaineering

Mt Blanc du Cheilon 3,869m  “undoubtedly one of the most beautiful peaks in the Western Valais….”  A perfect 3 day adventure completed by Mountain Guide Gary Dickson and Anand.

Yes, this is a fantastic classic Swiss  alpine mountaineering trip with a superb Cabane ( Cabane des Dix) as the launch point.  Fine alpine rock ridge travel then superb views of the Matterhorn, Dent Blanche and Dent d Herens at the summit ridge and then fun, exposed ridge travel and a final summit mini pitch to the very ‘airy’ summit where one can look directly down the very steep north face to the Cabane Dix 1000m below.

Private mountaineering instruction

Late March saw Mountain guide Gary and two German lads ( who have been working on a local region  vineyard ) head into Tasman  Saddle for a week for a private mountaineering instruction course.  Although the glacier was heavily crevassed, which is to be expected at this time of the year, conditions were especially good for learning cramponing technique and glacier travel.
